About Beat Bangaz DJ Academy

Preserve the culture. Evolve the craft. Inspire the next generation.

Our Story: A Legacy Built on Hip Hop

Beat Bangaz DJ Academy is an extension of a legacy forged through decades of dedication to Hip Hop, DJ culture, music, and cultural expression. At its heart is the Beat Bangaz collective, formed in Cape Town in 1999 by Grandmaster DJ Ready D, DJ E20, and DJ Azuhl. Built on a shared passion for the art of DJing and a commitment to pushing the culture forward, Beat Bangaz has become an enduring part of South Africa’s Hip Hop landscape.

The collective’s legacy is rooted in the foundations of South African Hip Hop, with its members contributing to the culture through DJing, turntablism, music production, international performances, television, radio broadcasting, and community engagement. Their individual journeys reflect different dimensions of the entertainment industry, united by a shared commitment to musical excellence, cultural preservation, and the evolution of the craft.

DJ Ready D is a pioneering South African DJ and turntablist whose contribution to Hip Hop extends beyond the decks. His association with influential groups Prophets of Da City and Brasse Vannie Kaap places him within an important chapter of South African music history. A former Good Hope FM presenter and now part of KFM, he has built a career spanning performance, broadcasting, and cultural influence.

DJ E20 is a founding member of the iconic Brasse Vannie Kaap and a longstanding contributor to South African Hip Hop and DJ culture. His role in the collective and his connection to the foundations of the movement form an integral part of the Beat Bangaz story.

DJ Azuhl is a DJ, producer, music curator, and educator whose career spans more than three decades. From international performances and radio broadcasting to music production and DJ education, his journey reflects a lifelong commitment to musical exploration, cultural preservation, and sharing knowledge.

DJ EMinor represents the continuation of this legacy into a new generation. As an official member of Beat Bangaz, he embodies the passing of knowledge and experience from one generation to the next, ensuring that the collective continues to evolve while remaining connected to its roots.

From Legacy to Education

In 2004, the collective extended its commitment to the culture through the establishment of Beat Bangaz DJ Academy. Founded on the belief that knowledge should be shared and the culture sustained, the academy created a platform for education, mentorship, and practical skills development.

Over the years, DJ culture and its technology have evolved considerably. From vinyl and turntablism to digital DJing, Rekordbox, and VirtualDJ, the academy has embraced these developments while remaining grounded in the fundamental skills, musical knowledge, creativity, and discipline that define the art of DJing.

Today, Beat Bangaz DJ Academy welcomes aspiring and developing DJs of different ages, backgrounds, and experience levels. Through practical, hands-on training and personalised guidance, students are encouraged to build confidence, develop their own style, and discover the possibilities that DJing offers.

The academy carries forward the principles that have shaped the collective for decades: creativity, technical excellence, individuality, respect for the culture, and a commitment to sharing knowledge.

Our Vision

Our vision is to be a leading force in DJ education in South Africa, recognised for preserving the heritage of DJ culture, evolving the craft through innovation, and inspiring future generations of DJs.

We aspire to build a thriving community of skilled, confident, and culturally aware DJs who understand the roots of the art form while embracing its future. By bridging generations, connecting tradition with technology, and creating opportunities for learning and development, we aim to ensure that DJ culture continues to flourish as a powerful form of artistic expression, cultural identity, and human connection.

Ultimately, our vision extends beyond teaching people how to mix music. It is about nurturing talent, preserving a cultural legacy, and equipping the next generation with the knowledge and confidence to shape the future of DJing.

Our Philosophy

At Beat Bangaz DJ Academy, we believe every DJ has a unique voice, and our role is to help them discover it.

We value practical experience, musical exploration, discipline, individuality, and mutual respect. We foster a safe, inclusive learning environment where students can experiment, make mistakes, ask questions, and grow without ego.

We believe that DJing is more than the equipment you use or the music you play. It is about how you listen, how you learn, how you express yourself, and how you connect with others.

The legacy of Beat Bangaz lives on through the DJs it has inspired, the knowledge it continues to share, and the next generation learning to find their own voice behind the decks.

Preserve the culture. Evolve the craft. Inspire the next generation.

Our Mission

Our mission is to empower aspiring and developing DJs through accessible, practical, and high-quality DJ education that builds technical proficiency, musical knowledge, confidence, and creative expression.

We are committed to passing on the skills, traditions, and values of DJ culture while embracing new technologies and evolving techniques. Through hands-on learning, mentorship, and individual guidance, we aim to create a supportive environment where every student can develop their potential, discover their unique identity, and grow both as a DJ and as an individual.

Guided by the principle of “each one, teach one,” we strive to make DJ knowledge accessible, nurture emerging talent, and contribute to the continued growth of South Africa’s DJ and music culture.
